Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he was told to sign a new number six for Liverpool after Jordan Henderson’s performance at Burnley in August.

The Reds have keenly felt Henderson’s absence in recent games after the England international was forced off during the first half of Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Manchester City at Anfield on New Year’s Eve.

Henderson has established himself as a key player under Klopp despite being utilised in a deeper role in the 2016-17 season, allowing the likes of Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane to push further forward.

The Liverpool captain was heavily criticised following the Merseyside outfit’s 2-0 loss to Burnley at Turf Moor in their second Premier League fixture of the season in August.

But Henderson has barely put a foot wrong since as Liverpool continue to challenge for the title.
Speaking during a Facebook Live session with Sky Sports on Friday afternoon, the German coach was asked whether Henderson is the most under-rated player in the Premier League.

Klopp replied: “Is he? I’m not sure. Maybe he was.”

“I remember after the Burnley game, everybody told me that we needed to buy a new number six because Henderson can’t play as a number six. We need a real warrior, a real fighter.

“Five or six months later, he is the most-underrated player in England.”

Asked if he was aware of Henderson before he took over at Liverpool, Klopp added: “Yes – before I came here. You have to wait until you work with them. You especially need to know the character. The character of our English players is
