A 27-year-old labourer, Musa Abu, who allegedly stole building materials valued at N1.62 million, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Abu, whose address is unknown, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa, told the court that Abu, on April 12 around 11.00 p.m at Ikeja, stole 65 bags of cement and marble tiles valued at N1.62 million.

Imhonwa said that the accused and others still at large broke into Mr Akintola Daramola’s building site and made away with the materials.

He said the accused was employed as a labourer at the complainant’s building site.

“The accused was caught by security guards, while trying to smuggle out the stolen goods from the building.

“He was apprehended and handed over to the police while his accomplices fled the scene of the crime,” Imhonwa said.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes three years imprisonment for anyone found guilty of stealing.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, admitted the accused to a bail of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Osunsanmi said that the sureties must be relations of the accused and be gainfully employed with the evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case until Aug. 3 for trial.
